In the Nazi camp of Pristina, Gjikë Kuqali, a martyred writer, was executed by a firing squad. He was born in Korçë, in 1921. In his hometown, he started secondary education at the National Lyceum (French), which he finished in Tirana. As a student, he participated in the National Liberation Anti-Fascist Movement. In the years 1943-1944 he was one of the leaders of the communist youth of Tirana. He was among the first collaborators and then editor of the magazine “Kushtrimi i Lirisë” (“Summons for freedom”). He published sketches and descriptions, in which he presented the state of the country under the fascist yoke and the youth’s struggle for liberation. In April 1944 he was arrested and in October he was shot by the Nazis in the Pristina camp. His writings were collected in the book “Qiriu” (“The candle”)(1955). (In the photo: Gjikë Kuqali)
