In the village of Saint Mitri (Italian: San Demetrio Corone) in Calabria, Damiano Guagliardi was born, essayist, writer, one of the biggest activists of the Arberesh issue in Italy. He finished the classical lyceum in his native country and then continued his studies at the Faculty of Sociology at the “Carlo Bo” University in Urbino. Before completing his university studies, he began political engagement in Calabria. In the years 2000–2014, he held the position of regional councilor for Calabria. He has also held the post of vice-president of the “Special Regional Commission to Counter the Mafia Phenomenon in Calabria” for two terms (2000-2005 and 2010-2014). Damiano Guagliardi also performed the role of secretary of the “Fifth Permanent Commission” for “Reforms and Decentralization”. In August 2008, he was appointed regional councilor for tourism, cultural heritage, emigration of Calabria to the world and linguistic minorities of Calabria. Damiano Guagliardi has been the only councilor for linguistic minorities of the Calabria district council (since the creation of this district). He has also held the position of president of the “Technical Advisory Committee of the Conference of Regions for ENIT Policies – National Tourism Agency”. Due to his belonging to the Albanian minority of Calabria, Damiano Guagliardi dedicated a large part of his professional activity to topics related to linguistic minorities, publishing monographs and essays of a historical and anthropological nature. Among these works, the most important is “La Diversità Arbereshe ” (“The diversity of Arbëresh”), realized in four volumes. (In the photo: Damiano Guagliardi)
