Ferid Murati

Ferid Murati, clinician and pharmacologist, professor, academic, winner of the “Nobel” prize in medicine (1998), was born in the city of Whiting (Indiana, USA). He was born in a family of Albanian origin. He attended college at “De Pauw” University in Greencastle (Greencastle, Indiana) for social sciences (1954-1958), but he also studied biology, anatomy, embryology and chemistry at the same time. He attended the Faculty of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis and the doctoral program at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio (1958–1965). He was included in the studies of Earl Sutherland and Theodore Rall (discoverers of cyclic AMP). After completing his internship (1965–1967) he began research at the Institute of Cardiology (1967–1970). He was invited by the University of Virginia to set up a new sector of clinical pharmacology in the department of medicine. He was the director of the center for clinical research (1971), director of the department of clinical pharmacology at the University of Virginia (1973), where he started the first experiments to research the biological effects of nitric oxide. He has held a series of leadership positions in renowned institutions of clinical and experimental medicine, without ever ceasing research. From 1997, head of the department of biology and pharmacology at the University of “Texas” in Houston and head of the Institute of Molecular Medicine from 1999. External member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, honorary member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo and of the Association of Doctors, Dentists and Albanian Pharmacists of North Macedonia; member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000), etc. He holds the titles “Doctor Honoris Causa” of the University of Tirana and the University of Southeast Europe (Tetovo). He was decorated with the “Honour of the Nation” order. (In the photo: Ferid Murati)
