Koto Hoxhi (Kostandin Hoxhi), activist of the National Renaissance, of Albanian education and culture, Teacher of the People, passed away. He was born in Qestorat in Lunxhëria (Gjirokastër), in 1824. In Qestorat, he worked as a high school teacher in Greek, secretly giving lessons in Albanian. He developed lively patriotic activity for the implementation of the program of the Istanbul Society (1879). He participated in the special commission of the Istanbul Committee, which was formed to solve the alphabet issue, where he defended the variant drafted by Sami Frashëri, as well as in the publication of the Istanbul “Alfabetare” (1879). He is also known as one of the founders of the Albanian theater with the theatrical performance “Dasma lunxhiote“ (“Lunxhëria Wedding”) (1874). Wrote patriotic poems and was one of the initiators of didactic poetry for children. For his patriotic activity, he was imprisoned and persecuted by the Ottoman government, but until the end he remained firm in his positions. (In the photo: Koto Hoxhi)
