In Përmet, Laver Bariu, clarinetist, singer and creator of “Grupi i sazeve të Përmetit”, People’s Artist, passed away. He was born in Përmet, in 1929. He was formed as a musician in the family environment, under the influence of his father and his friends, musicians and folk singers. He was also influenced by the instrumentists of Leskovik. Laver Bariu has participated in all folklore festivals of Gjirokastra, in other national festivals and in many tours abroad. He has made music recordings in the main institutions of the country as well as in the Albanian Radio Television and accompanied well-known folk singers. He has also produced several CDs with Albanian and foreign researchers. He is a participant and main producer of music in a number of films of “Kinostudio ‘Shqipëria e Re’ ”, such as: “Gjeneral Gramafoni” (“General Gramophone”) (1977), “Këngët e zemrës” (“Songs of the heart) (1989). In 2001, by the decision of the municipal council of the city of Përmet, he was declared an “Honorary Citizen”, alongside the brothers Frashëri, Odhise Paskali and Mentor Xhemali.
