Pierre Cabanes, historian of antiquity and epigraphist, professor, external member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, passed away. For many years, professor of the history of the ancient world at the University of Clermont-Ferrand II and then at the University of Paris X. Specially interested in Albania since 1971, he initiated the renewal of relations between Albanian and French researchers in the field of archeology and of the ancient history of Albania, the first phase of which related to the name of his compatriot Leon Rey. Pier Kaban founded the new French archaeological and epigraphic mission in Albania. As a scholar of antiquity, he is particularly known for his fundamental studies on ancient Epirus and Southern Illyria: “L’Ëpire de la mort Pyrrhos à la conquête romaine 272-167 av. JC”, Paris, 1976 (“Epis after the death of Pyrrhus until the Roman conquest 272–167 per”) and “ Les Illyriens de Bardylis à Genthios IV-II siècles av. JC” , Paris, 1988 (“The Illyrians from Bardhyli to Ghent, IV-II centuries”), as well as for the publication of the “Corpus of the Greek inscriptions of Southern Illyria and Epirus” (“Corpus des inscriptions grecques de l’ Illyrie meridionale et d’Epire“, a work in four volumes in collaboration with Albanian researchers; he headed the working group for the drafting of the work “Archaeological Map of Albania” (2008). Pier Kaban has organized four colloquiums in France with the framework theme “Southern Illyria and Epirus in Antiquity”, as well as several scientific conferences.
