Frederik Shiroka

Frederik Shiroka, surgeon, doctor of sciences, was born in Shkodër. He finished high school in Krems (Austria). He attended higher studies and specialized in Graz (1927–1935). In the years 1935-1939, 1946-1955 he was in charge of the surgery service in the Civil Hospital of Tirana and in the years 1939-1946, in the Hospital of Shkodra. Helped the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War by treating and operating anti-fascist fighters. Frederik Shiroka applied the advanced surgical techniques of the time and is the founder of modern Albanian surgery. In the years 1952-1953, he applied for the first time in Albania the technique of the surgeon Terence Milli (performed in England in the years 1948-1949) in the surgical treatment of prostate adenoma. He performed surgical interventions on all organs of the human body, especially on the lungs (in cases of echinococcus, tuberculosis, etc.) and on the abdomen and distinguished himself as a urologist and orthopedist. He was a member of the Institute of Sciences. Pavilion IV of the Civil Hospital of Tirana bears his name. He passed away in 1955. (In the photo: Frederik Shiroka)
