In Athens (Greece), Irene Papas, Greek actress, archaic figure considered a symbol of Greek beauty and a famous representative of Mediterranean culture, passed away. Born in a family of Albanian origin, on September 3, 1926. Irene Papas became internationally known thanks to her acting skills and her charismatic and dynamic personality. During her career, she performed important female roles in theater and cinema, fully embodying the power of ancient tragedy. Throughout her life, she starred in over 80 films produced around the world, playing alongside stars such as Marlon Brando, Katherine Hepburn, Yves Montand, Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Richard Burton, James Cagney, and others. Papas also worked as a singer collaborating with the composer Vangelis, in the recordings of the group’s last album “Aphrodite’s Child” and then in “Odes”, with traditional Greek songs and “Rhapsodies” based on Easter hymns. In addition to work in film and theater, her work in Italy included roles on television, while her contribution to the arts has earned her numerous awards both inside and outside of Greece. In 2009 she received the “Golden Lion” award at the 40th Venice Biennale and in the same year, she was among 260 artists invited to the Vatican, to transmit God’s message through their art.
