Iljaz Fishta, an economist, historian, and professor, was born in Shkodër. He completed high school in his hometown and pursued higher education, graduating in financial economics from the Economic-Financial Institute of Leningrad (1946–1950). He worked at the Ministry of Finance (1950–1953), in the apparatus of the Central Committee of the Party of Labor of Albania (1953–1966), as director of the study directorate in the State Planning Commission (1966–1969), director of the State Bank branch in Shkodër (1969–1973), scientific secretary of the Institute of Economic Studies (1973–1979), and head of a sector at the Institute of History (1979–1991). Iljaz Fishta’s scientific work includes three main areas: economic theory, the state’s economic policy, and especially the economic history of Albania from the late 19th century through the 20th century. Fishta published several monographs, including “Sistemi monetar dhe i kreditit në Shqipëri 1925–1944” (“The Monetary and Credit System in Albania 1925–1944”) (1971), “Ndërhyrja e kapitalit të huaj dhe politika e saj skllavëruese për Shqipërinë 1925–1931” (“Foreign Capital Intervention and Its Enslaving Policy for Albania 1925–1931”) (1979), “Ndërhyrja e kapitalit të huaj dhe pasojat e saj skllavëruese për Shqipërinë 1931–1936” (“Foreign Capital Intervention and Its Enslaving Consequences for Albania 1931–1936”) (1989), and “Ndërhyrja e kapitalit të huaj dhe roli i saj për pushtimin e Shqipërisë 1936–1939” (“Foreign Capital Intervention and Its Role in the Occupation of Albania 1936–1939”) (1999). He also co-authored works such as “Gjendja ekonomike e Shqipërisë në vitet 1912–1944” (“The Economic Situation of Albania in the Years 1912–1944”) (1983), “Prona private në Shqipëri” (“Private Property in Albania”) (1996), and “Historia e Ekonomisë së Shqipërisë 1944–1960” (“The Economic History of Albania 1944–1960”) (2004), among others. Iljaz Fishta served as deputy editor-in-chief for journals such as People’s Economy, Economic Problems, and Historical Studies. He was awarded the Republic’s Third Class Prize and the “Master of Great Work” order. He passed away in 2005.
