The “Assembly of Junik,” a national gathering to determine the organizational measures and political program of the general uprising against Ottoman rule was organized. The assembly took place in the village of Junik (northwest of Gjakova) with the participation of representatives from the Kosovo vilayet, the regions of Dibra, Shkodra, and the south of the country, under the leadership of Hasan Prishtina. A pledge was made during the assembly to engage in warfare for national liberation. The Assembly approved a program for the recognition of Albania’s autonomy, the establishment of Albanian administration, the designation of the Albanian language with the national alphabet as the official language, the raising of the Albanian flag throughout the country, the appointment of a governor-general of Albanian origin, and securing from the Great Powers to fulfill these demands, which were presented to the Sublime Porte. The decisions of the Junik Assembly gave momentum to the liberation uprising in 1912, which spread throughout the country. (In the photo: The work “Junik’s Assembly” by the painter Rexhep Goci.)
